Coalition forces "probably" involved in numerous civilian deaths in Mosul - US general

WASHINGTON, March 28 (KUNA) -- Coalition forces were "probably" involved in the death of many civilians during recent bombing in western Mosul, the commander of coalition forces against the so-called Islamic State (IS) in Iraq said Tuesday.
"We probably had a role in those casualties," US General Stephen Townsend of Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve, told reporters in a phone briefing from Baghdad. "A general officer has been appointed to lead investigations." A previous statement from the coalition announced the investigation into the death of at least 200 people in the town after a March 17 airstrike.
The US carries out the vast majority of air strikes in Iraq, at the request of the Iraqi army. US and international media reports have been circulating this week suggesting the US may be behind the deaths of somewhere between 200-300 Iraqi civilians. (end) ak.hb
