Syrians, Afghans, Iraqis top list of asylum seekers in EU

BRUSSELS, March 16 (KUNA) -- Around 1.2 million people applied for asylum in the EU in 2016, a number slightly down compared with 2015, EU's statistical office said Thursday.
Syrians (334 800 applicants), Afghans (183 000) and Iraqis (127 000) remained the main citizenship of people seeking asylum in the EU Member States in 2016, according to figures released by Eurostat.
With 722 300 applicants registered in 2016, Germany recorded 60 percent of all applicants in the EU Member States.
It was followed by Italy (121, 200) France (76, 000), Greece (49, 900), Austria (39, 900) and the United Kingdom (38, 300) it noted. (end) nk.ma
