IRBIL, Feb 27 (KUNA) -- Iraqi federal police and rapid response units have killed at least 929 militants of so-called Islamic State, and taken control of 26 villages and neighborhoods since launching third phase of liberating Mosul on February 19.
The units destroyed 84 varied vehicles and dozens of explosive devices, and shot down three aircraft, Federal Police Chief Raed Jawdat said in a statement Monday.
They seized large amounts of weapons and projectiles since the operations of liberating the city began.
These units today controlled fully Ghazlani camp and other neighborhoods, as well as faculty of engineering and other facilities, he noted.
The Iraqi forces announced today that they retook what is called the "fourth bridge," which will, according to reports, help them to bring more reinforcement and supplies they need.
The forces including federal police and counter terrorism units regained international Mosul airport during the first days of the assault on Mosul's western side.
Meanwhile, Minister of Displacement and Migration Jassem Mohammad Al-Jaff said during a news conference today that the number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) across the country has, so far, risen to 4.3 million.
More than 1.6 million of them have come back to their homes, he added, noting that the ministry has received since the operations of liberating Nineveh city so far 235,000 from the city and other neighborhoods.
The ministry is ready to receive additional numbers of IDPs from the right side of Mosul, he stressed. (end) sbr.hm
