Kuwait supports Arab, Islamic groups at UNHRC -- envoy

GENEVA, Feb 26 (KUNA) -- The State of Kuwait supports Arab and Islamic groups during 34th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) due to get underway on Monday, said the country's permanent delegate to the UN.
Ambassador Jamal Al-Ghuneim, in a statement to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on Sunday, said the session would be of paramount significance for it would outline the council's strategy in 2017, adding participants would examine up to 100 reports about human rights globally.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will address the session, for the first time, shedding light on the international organization's concerns regarding human rights globally. Moreover, foreign ministers from various countries will make statements on challenges facing these basic rights.
Ambassador Al-Ghuneim said the Kuwaiti mission would be involved in an interactive dialogue with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Prince Zeid bin Raad, regarding effects of conflicts and natural catastrophes on various forms of human rights.
The State of Kuwait dedicates particular attention to key issues such as boosting rights of children and families, empowering cases of special challenges attain such rights, respecting minorities' rights, separating terrorism from religions and races and safeguarding nations' development rights.
Al-Ghuneim predicted that the conferees would hold serious discussions on status of the Muslim minority in Myanmar, breaches of the Arabs' human rights in occupied territories and negative impact of conflicts on the rights in Africa.
The session is scheduled to kick off tomorrow and proceed till March 24th.
The council currently includes Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, Iraq, Egypt and Tunisia. (end) ta.rk
