UNSC resolution 2254 basis for Syria talks - UN official

GENEVA, Feb 24 (KUNA) -- Acting Chief of Staff Office UN Special Envoy for Syria Michael Contet on Friday stressed the need that UN Security Council Resolution 2254 should remain as basic reference point for the ongoing round of the intra-Syrian peace talks in Geneva.
"The Special Envoy (Staffan) de Mistura started discussing how the process can move forward on all aspects and issues that have been identified in the Resolution 2254," Contet told reporters following the second day of the talks.
"The Special Envoy exchanged views this morning and afternoon with interlocutors of the Syrian government - led by Bashar Al-Jaafari, and the opposition delegation, led by Nasr Hariri.
"He made detailed proposals on how the talks could proceed in order to facilitate substantive discussions," Contet pointed out.
The UN official noted that the UNSC resolution is the fruit of lengthy UN-brokered negotiations on the Syrian crisis and charts the course of the peace talks.
He echoed de Mistura's statement yesterday that the ongoing round of talks is unlikely to see a breakthrough given the mistrust on both sides of the negotiations.
He added that the Special Envoy will be holding in-depth exchanges with two delegations of the Moscow and Cairo platforms over the weekend. (pickup previous) ta.gb
