KUWAIT, Feb 23 (KUNA) -- 1921 -- The ninth ruler of Kuwait, Sheikh Salem Al-Mubarak, passed away. Sheikh Salem, whose rule started in February 1917, was known for being religious and tolerant. His era was distinguished with law and order.
1938 -- Oil in abundance was discovered at the first Burgan field at 3,672 feet under the ground. This date signaled birth of the oil industry in the State of Kuwait.
1965 -- The first Italian ambassador to Kuwait presented his credentials to Sheikh Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah.
1966 -- The first Norwegian and Venezuelan ambassadors to Kuwait presented their credentials to Sheikh Sabah Al-Salem.
1980 -- The Amir, Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, issued a decree on amending the agreement for establishing the Arab Petroleum Services Company, approved by the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) in Kuwait on December 4, 1979.
1981 -- Parliamentary elections for the fifth legislative term were held, with 477 nominees and 42,008 voters.
1983 -- Dar Al-Athar Al-Islamiyah, which displayed a large collection of rare Islamic art pieces owned by Sheikh Nasser Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, was inaugurated.
1986 -- Kuwait's Amir, Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, inaugurated the new headquarters of the National Assembly.
1992 -- An inaugural ceremony was held for exportation of the first shipment of liquefied gas.
1999 -- Al-Arabi football team won the Sixth Crown Prince Championship.
2005 -- Then Prime Minister, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, inaugurated the new oil pier of Kuwait National Petroleum Company in Al-Ahmadi refinery. Construction of the mega project, the largest in the Middle East, cost KD 100 million. It could accommodate giant oil tankers with cargo-bearing capacity of 350,000 tons.
2010 -- His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah inaugurated a Petrochemical products complex.
2010 -- Kuwaiti Multiple Sclerosis (MS) society established as a step to spread awareness on the disorder.
2011 -- His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah opened 360 mall in Al-Zahra area.
2014 -- Minister of Public Works as well as Minister of Water and Electricity Abdulaziz Al-Ibrahim signed a KD 23 million deal to construct seven transformers in Jaber Al-Ahmad area. (end) gta
