DOHA, Feb 21 (KUNA) -- Kuwait is keen on cooperating with human rights mechanisms on regional and international levels through efforts to enhance national measures in accordance with international standards, a Kuwaiti official affirmed Tuesday.
Kuwaiti authorities exert significant efforts toward preserving and protecting human rights principles in line with the legislations that are in line with the international agreements on human rights, Deputy Foreign Minister Assistant Talal Al-Mutairi said in a press statement.
Al-Mutairi, who is also Head of the Human Rights Office at the Foreign Ministry, made his remarks on the sidelines of the International Conference on Human Rights Approach to Conflict Situations in the Arab Region, which kicked off in Doha on Monday.
He pointed out Prince Zeid bin Raad's visit to Kuwait as the High Commissioner of the Office of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on February 7th, and the positive outcomes resulted from his meeting with His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and senior officials.
His Highness the Amir has informed Prince Zeid about the latest updates on the country's national measures on human rights, including the formation of the child protection law, National Diwan for Human Rights, and family court, said the Kuwait official.
Meanwhile, Al-Mutairi explained that the ongoing conference is held under difficult regional and international circumstances, noting that it sheds light on the various challenges in implementing the key foundations of human rights.
He also mentioned that the conference is organized by the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), in cooperation with the General Secretariat of the Council of Arab Interior Ministers and the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions.
The conference highlights the role of human rights promotion and the settling of conflicts to enhance international peace and stability with participation of ministers and representatives of governments and regional and international inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations related to the protection of human rights, conflict resolution and peacekeeping, said Al-Mutairi.
The event also highlights the NHRC's role in promoting human rights, particularly during times of conflict and crises, he added. (end) nnd.ma
