Trump orders strategy within 30 days for IS defeat

WASHINGTON, Jan 29 (KUNA) -- US President Donald Trump signed an executive order late Saturday for a plan to defeat the so-called Islamic State (IS) to be submitted to him in 30 days' time.
Trump tasked his new Pentagon chief, James Mattis, to develop the plan, according to the text of the order.
The "preliminary draft" must include a "comprehensive strategy" to defeat IS, as well as "recommended changes to rules of engagement and other United States policy restrictions that exceed the requirements of international law regarding the use of force" against IS, the document said.
In addition, the draft must list any "public diplomacy, information operations, and cyber strategies to isolate and delegitimize" IS, and identify "new coalition partners" in that fight, the order said.
Trump also demanded additional means of cutting off financial support to IS, and a "detailed" strategy on how the US will fund this initiative, the document showed. (end) ys.mb
