Kuwait allocates USD 10 mln for Syrian refugees in Iraq's Kurdistan

IRBIL, Jan 23 (KUNA) -- Kuwait has allocated USD 10 million for Syrian refugees in Iraq's Kurdistan province, an official from Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) said Monday.
Sheikh Ahmad Ali Al-Sabah, member of KFAED's mission visiting Iraq's Kurdistan, told KUNA the financial aid would be used to carry out projects for Syrian refugees in collaboration with UNHCR, the UN refugee agency.
He said the visit of the mission aimed at evaluating the refugee projects in the province, and added the USD 10 million would be used to improve public services in three camps in Dahuk and Irbil.
Dr. Hanan Hamdan, head of UNHCR office in Kuwait, said her agency was happy with the cooperation with KFAED to support the Syrian refugees in Iraq's Kurdistan.
She said the visit aimed at studying the remaining details related to special agreements to support the Syrian refugees in camps in the province.
Governor of Irbil Nawzad Hadi, in remarks after a meeting with the mission, said the refugee camps needed further funding to overcome problems caused by the large number of refugees.
He said hospital in the province in general and Irbil in particular were stretched with the large number of patients.
Dr. Omar Al-Kanderi, the State of Kuwait General Consul in Irbil, reaffirmed Kuwait's keenness to help the Syrian refugees either bilaterally or through the UN agencies. (pickup previous) sbr.bs
