UN top official updates UNSC on Iran nuclear deal

NEW YORK, Jan 19 (KUNA) -- A UN top official affirmed that the organization has not received any information regarding Iranian ballistic missile activities or missile-related transfers to Iran undertaken contrary to the relevant provisions of resolution 2231, which endorses a plan of action on Iran's nuclear program.
Undersecretary General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman briefed the Security Council against a backdrop of steady implementation, cooperation and progress of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) that was reached by the E3/EU+3 and Iran.
The UN official told the 15-member body that the report submitted by the Secretary General also indicated that they have not received any report, nor is aware of any open source information regarding the supply, sale, or transfer to Iran of nuclear-related items undertaken contrary to the provisions of the resolution.
Moreover, Member States have made greater use of the procurement channel process through which the transfer of nuclear-related items is approved by the Council on the basis of recommendation provided by the Joint Commission, he added.
The report that was submitted to the Council by the UN Chief confirms that Iranian and other media outlets reported that Major General Qasem Soleimani and Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Naqdi have engaged in foreign travel.
Therefore, the UN Secretary General called upon all Member States to take the necessary measures to prevent the entry or transit through their territories of individuals presently on the list maintained pursuant to resolution 2231.
In the course of the Secretariat's contact with the Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to seek clarification on the statement by the Secretary General of Hezbollah and the foreign travels of Major General Soleimani and Brigadier General Naqdi, Feltman told the Council that Iran underlined "that measures undertaken by the Islamic Republic of Iran in combating terrorism and violent extremism in the region have been consistent with its national security interests and international commitments." Further, Feltman informed Council members of Iran's participation in an arms exhibit in Iraq's capital, Baghdad, in March 2016, and that that all items exhibited were returned to Iran.
Since "Implementation Day", the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has issued five reports documenting continued implementation by Iran of its nuclear-related commitments.
Resolution 2231 adopted unanimously in July 2015, endorses (JCPOA) that was signed earlier that month by the five permanent members of the Council (China, France, Russia, the UK and the US), plus Germany, the European Union (EU) and Iran. (end) mao.gta
