UK to leave EU single market, customs union - May

LONDON, Jan 17 (KUNA) -- UK Prime Minister Theresa May announced Tuesday that her country is leaving the EU single market and customs union after Brexit.
The UK cannot regain all its legitimate and legal powers from the EU, May said while addressing senior British politicians and heads of diplomatic missions to her country.
However, Britain will retain its membership at the EU single market, which imposes commitment to the European procedures and respect of free transportation, services, capitals, and individuals, she added.
May also noted that her country's government would not even consider negotiations to keep its membership in EU's institutions and bodies.
She also indicated that London is actually proposing a negotiation with the EU Commission to sign a comprehensive free trade deal that secures its interests, as well as all EU member-countries'.
Remaining in the EU customs union would prevent Britain from signing free trade agreements with world countries, the British Premier noted, adding that her country wishes to remove all obstacles that hinder British trade's expansion with non-European economies.
May also mentioned that she is to propose signing a bilateral customs agreement with EU leaders that allows customs duty-free trade between British and European companies, which would eventually contribute in boosting trade exchange and creating jobs.
Meanwhile, the British Premier affirmed her government's keenness and readiness to sign free trade deals, following Brexit, with a number of countries of important economies, including the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, and GCC countries. (end) kd.ma
