KUWAIT, Jan 17 (KUNA) -- 1962 -- The Amir, Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah issued an Amiri decree to form the first Cabinet in Kuwait's history, and Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah is appointed Minister of Finance and Economy.
1962 -- The first Ministry of Defense was formed, formerly named Armed Defense Forces.
1974 -- Al-Watan, a weekly newspaper, started publishing as a daily.
1981 -- Abdullah Al-Nouri, a leading religious preacher, writer, and historian, passed away.
1984 -- Municipal Council elections were held.
1991 -- Coalition troops started air attacks against Iraqi troops in Kuwait and Iraq.
2001 -- Kuwait dismisses statements by Iraqi Deputy Premier Tareq Aziz and by Uday Saddam Hussein that Kuwait was part of Iraq, as blatant violation of UN resolution 833 relevant to demarcation of borders between the two countries.
2004 -- Kuwait's permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Nabeela Al-Mullah, presented her credentials, thus becoming the first female Muslim ambassador in the UN.
2005 -- Kuwait launched campaign against Rift Valley Fever.
2008 -- Minister of Finance Mustafa Al-Shimali announced that Umm Al-Maradim Island was to be a customs office implementing laws and regulations. (end) gta
