Egypt's police kill 10 "terrorists" in N. Sinai

CAIRO, Jan 13 (KUNA) -- Egyptian police forces on Friday killed at least 10 "terrorists" in Arish city in northern Sinai, Interior Ministry said.
Security apparatuses received information that a leader of Ansar Bait Al-Maqdis was involved in forming some terrorist groups which were assigned to carry out attacks on police and army forces, the ministry added in a statement.
These groups managed to carry out a number of terrorist attacks, including attacks on two security checkpoints on January 9 in Arish city that left some policemen dead, it noted.
Police counter-terrorism units succeeded in knowing the place where the "terrorists" were found hiding, it said.
When the "terrorists" felt that the units were close to the place, they opened fire towards them in an attempt to escape, it noted, indicating that the units dealt with the source of fire, killing these "terrorist" members.
The Interior Ministry stressed its determination to counter such "terrorists" and foil their hostile plots so as to uproot terrorism in the country.
Egyptian army and police have been launching operations against an entrenched Islamist insurgency for several years in northern Sinai. (end) esm.hm
