Iraqi cleric escapes assassination attempt in W. Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Jan 2 (KUNA) -- Sunni Grand Mufti of Iraq Sheikh Mahdi Al-Sumaidaie escaped an assassination attempt Monday in western the Iraqi capital, Iraqi police announced.
A roadside bomb went off at the passing of Al-Sumaidaie's vehicle near Umm Al-Tubul Mosque, a police source told KUNA, adding that the Iraqi cleric and his bodyguards survived the explosions without sustaining injuries or wounds.
Al-Sumaidaie is known for publically opposing the so-called Islamic State (IS) and denouncing its ideology. He has been a subject of numerous failed assassination attempts. (end) ahh.ma
