Kuwait insists on plan to provide 15 pct of energy out of renewable energy

AMMAN, Dec 7 (KUNA) -- The State of Kuwait is resolved to go ahead with its strategy to provide 15 percent of its energy needs out of renewable energy by 2030, an oil official said on Wednesday.
Speaking at the 3rd Jordan International Energy Summit, held in Amman, Sheikh Salem Salman Al-Sabah, who represented the Kuwait Gulf Oil Company, said Kuwait commits itself to the promise given by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah during the 18th UN Climate Change Conference in 2012 to get 15 percent of energy out of renewably energy.
Organized by the Arab Renewable Energy Commission, the forum which concludes later today mainly aims at showing investment opportunities available in Jordan and the region.
On his participation in the event, Sheikh Salem Salman said it is meant to capitalize on experience, experiments and projects carried out in the renewable energy sector, with a constellation of Arab and international experts attending.
He stressed Kuwait's interest in finding sustainable energy solutions out of renewable sources such as solar energy, wind power and others, hoping that the recommendations to be produced by the conferees would be conducive to Kuwait's experiment in the efficient use of renewably energy.
Addressing the forum, Secretary-General of the Arab Renewable Energy Commission Mohammad Al-Taani said the renewable energy sector in the Arab world needs investments worth USD 500 billion until 2030.
Energy systems in Arab countries hinge upon fossil oil which is not sustainable economically, environmentally and socially, he regretted.
The conferees underlined the significance of improving the efficiency of energy efficiency, capitalizing on unused potential in renewable energy resources, and exploiting oil export revenues. (end) mjb.mt
