GENEVA, Nov 23 (KUNA) -- Kuwait has begun doling out financial aid allocated for support of international humanitarian organizations in Iraq, the country's permanent envoy to the United Nations (UN) Ambassador Jamal Al-Ghunaim said on Wednesday.
In a statement to KUNA, the Kuwaiti diplomat noted that the aid was first announced during Washington's donors conference, a measure intended to meet the humanitarian needs of Iraqis victimized by war.
Moreover, he added that the financial aid would be instrumental in mitigating the suffering of displaced people in Iraq, which would ultimately contribute to restoring peace and security in the war-torn nation.
Meanwhile, the UN's UNHCR Director for the Middle East and North Africa Bureau and Regional Refugee Coordinator Amin Awadh told KUNA that the "aid has come in an apropos time due to the urgent humanitarian situation in Iraq." He also lauded Kuwait's humanitarian support of nations mired in conflict, saying the country has never failed to help out the hapless and needy. (end) ta.nam
