US calls on S. Sudan to end supporting opposition groups

WASHINGTON, Oct 21 (KUNA) -- The US called on the South Sudanese government to cease harboring or supporting Sudanese armed opposition groups, according to State Department Deputy Spokesperson Mark Toner.
"The Republic of South Sudan is harboring and providing assistance to armed Sudanese opposition groups," said Toner, "despite its obligations under international law." The US urged the country's leaders to "redouble" their efforts to meet the commitments "recently reached with Sudan under which both sides agreed to end support for armed opposition groups on either side." Toner noted that armed opposition forces and their involvement in South Sudan's internal conflicts "destabilizes both Sudan and South Sudan." (end) ak.rk
