Arab League welcomes new ceasefire in Yemen

CAIRO, Oct 19 (KUNA) -- Arab League Secretary General Ahmad Abul-Gheit welcomed the new UN-proposed ceasefire in Yemen, expected to start Wednesday midnight.
Abul-Gheit also wished the ceasefire would be expanded to allow warring parties to return to the negotiating table to mull a political solution.
These remarks were made by Abul-Gheit in a phone conversation with the UN Special Envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmad today, noted Spokesman of the Arab League Secretary General Mahmoud Afifi in a press statement.
He added that the Arab League chief also expressed appreciation of the efforts exerted by the UN in cooperation with other regional and international parties in handling the crisis.
Afifi unveiled that Abul-Gheit has also phoned Yemeni Foreign Minister Abdulmalak Al-Mekhlafi.
The phone conversation focused on the latest political and security developments in Yemen, he said.(end) mfm.rg.ibi
