NEW YORK, Oct 13 (KUNA) -- UN top officials lauded Kuwait and its leadership, valuing greatly its membership of the United Nations.
The Kuwait Mission to the UN held a reception for the Asia-Pacific Group, late Wednesday, in its capacity as Chair, with the presence of President of the 71st Session of the General Assembly Ambassador Peter Thomson and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. Welcoming the 53 other members, Kuwait Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Mansour Al-Otaibi expressed deep gratefulness for receiving the Chairmanship of the group for the second time during his term as an Ambassador.
Al-Otaibi took the occasion and thanked the Members of the Asia-Pacific Group for endorsing Kuwait's candidature to the Security Council for the term 2018-19. He assured that Kuwait will do its absolute best to represent the interest of the Group and uphold the principles of the United Nations Charter.
On his part, the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon expressed his deepest admiration and gratitude to His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah for his steadfast support to the work of the UN.
He also highlighted His Highness the Amir's humanitarian side and thanked him for his compassionate leadership in convening the three pledging conferences, as well as co-hosting the fourth with the UK for Syria.
UN Chief told the attendees that some of the Asia-Pacific Group countries are rising to be world's powerful economy, underlining the fact that there is a progress in many areas such as the social economic development.
He expressed pride that the group will be "a center and driving force and powerful engine of growth in many areas such as political, democratic, authority and human rights." On the sidelines of the reception, the President of the General Assembly Ambassador Thomson of Fiji told KUNA, Kuwait has always been a very active member in the UN, and an important player.
Speaking of Kuwait's chairmanship of the Asian Pacific Group, and being a sole candidate for the Security Council 2018-19, he said "Kuwait is a greatly valued member of the UN Family." The Chairmanship of the Asia-Pacific Group falls on a Member state almost every five-years, It has 53 members and is the second largest regional group by number of member states (one fewer than the African Group).(end) mao.ag
