BRUSSELS, Oct 12 (KUNA) -- Three Libyan deputies from the parliament in Tobruk urged Wednesday the European Union (EU) and the international community to intensify their efforts to restore peace and stability in Libya.
Ibrahim Salem Oun, Secretary General of Libyan armed forces, Taerk El Garoushi, legal affairs committee chair, and Ali Ibrhaim Khaled, chair of the foreign affairs committee from the Tobruk parliament were invited by the Group of Liberals in the EP to speak at a conference in Brussels on the current situation in Libya.
MEP from the Liberals group, Javier Nart of Spain, who hosted the meeting, in his introductory remarks noted that since 2014 the Libyan political power has been split between two rival governments in Tripoli and in Tobruk.
The government in Tobruk was recognized by the international community in December 2015.
After five years of civil war and a fundamental change in regime the situation in Libya remains worrisome.
Recent events like the battle of Sirte and the fights over the control of oil facilities and terminals are putting Libya back on the global agenda, he noted.
The three Libyan parliamentarians called for non-interference by some foreign countries in Libya and they urged for the dismantling of militia groups and urged for national unity.
They accused militia and terrorist groups in Libya of exploiting the migration crisis and of sending illegal migrants to Europe for financial interests. (end) nk.mb
