Council of Europe sends observer mission for Moroccan elections

PARIS, Sept 30 (KUNA) -- The Council of Europe's Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) announced Friday that it has been invited by Morocco to send an observer mission to that country for its legislative elections to be held October 7, a statement from PACE said.
During its visit from October 5-8, the 11-member observer team will meet with parliamentary groups from Morocco's House of Representatives and with Ministry of the Interior officials who are overseeing the elections.
The team will also have discussions with the National Council of Human rights, the High Authority for Audiovisual Communication and representatives of the international community, civil society and local media.
The Moroccan Parliament has a special "Partner for Democracy" status with the Council of Europe Assembly since 2011, with a view to establishing institutional cooperation between the two bodies.
The Council of Europe's PACE has 47 member countries, with the participation of 324 deputies from those nations' national parliaments.
It has a mandate to monitor democracy and human rights in its member States and also reviews "partner" countries' performances. (end) jk.rk
