UN ready to deliver aid to Aleppo once access granted - spokesman

NEW YORK, Sept 27 (KUNA) -- The UN is ready to provide aid for people in need in the Syrian city of Aleppo once access to them is granted, spokesman Farhan Haq said Tuesday.
"There are 250,000 people trapped in eastern Aleppo and we are ready to provide aid for them once access is granted, but it has not been given," Haq told a daily press briefing.
"We need a cessation of fighting and access to the main road to deliver aid to people in need," he added.
The UN has convoys with aid supplies and ready to enter Aleppo, said Haq, but there were "still unable to go" because of the fighting.
People in Aleppo, one of Syria's largest cities, have been in dire need of humanitarian assistance.
A UN-Syrian Red Crescent convoy was scheduled to enter Aleppo in mid-September, but the trucks were hit killing some 20 people and injuring many others.
The attack, which brought worldwide condemnation, was a setback in efforts to help the people in the besieged city.
The US and Russia, who brokered a ceasefire agreement, are at odds over the way to enforce the cessation of hostilities. UN special envoy Staffan de Mistura, requested two days ago a weekly 48-hour truce in a bid to make sure aid reach those in need. (end) mao.bs
