UN wraps up General Debates with affirmation of principles of charter

NEW YORK, Sept 26 (KUNA) -- The UN General Assembly today closed its 6-day General Debates recalling Leader's affirmation of the spirit and principles of the UN charter, and their confirmation of their faith in the central role of this organization.
In a closing statement delivered on behalf of the UNGA's 71st President Peter Thomson of Fiji, he said that the majority of the delivered speeches by world leaders focused on their countries' priorities and concerns, as well as their hope for peace, human rights, sustainable development and critical global issues.
In line with the theme of the 71st session, many leaders expressed their commitment to implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In this regard, the UN official expressed his encouragement by the fact that so many member states have already embedded the SDGs into their plans and policies. He reiterated his call to member states to see the SDGs included on the education curricula of every country around the world, as the youth of the world will be the inheritors of the 2030 Agenda.
During the past week Kuwait was highly represented in the General Assembly and its activities. His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah led the Kuwaiti delegation to the Leaders' Summit on refugees that was called by US President Barack Obama.
Representative of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, His Highness the Premier Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah delivered Kuwait's speech before the General Assembly, where he highlighted the country's continuous response to humanitarian assistance. He also emphasized Kuwait's commitment to the principles and purposes of the UN Charter during its membership in the Security Council, thanking Members States of the Asia-Pacific Group in New York, for their endorsement of Kuwait's candidature to the seat in the Security Council for the period 2018-2019.
The First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah had plenty of meetings held on the sidelines of the 71st UNGA activities, highlighting Kuwait's leading role at the regional and international levels.
Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled met with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, and also chaired a coordination meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), where ministers discussed terrorism, the Palestinian cause, Syria, Iraq and Yemen.
The Kuwaiti top diplomat also co-chaired the Arab-African partnership coordination committee meeting to prepare for the 4th Arab-African summit, due in Equatorial Guinea next November.
He held 33 bilateral meetings with officials from UN member countries to discuss a host of issues listed on the agenda of the UNGA. He also participated in ministerial meetings between the GCC on one side, and the US, Britain, France and Russia on the other. (end) mao.bs
