Clashes kill 22 policemen, wounds 11 others in Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD, Sept 23 (KUNA) -- At least 22 policemen were killed and around 11 others received injuries during a firefight with Taliban rebels in the capital of Afghanistan’s central Uruzgan province, said officials on Friday.
Provincial governor’s spokesman, Dost Mohammad Nayab told media that the three-hour-long gun battle erupted after militants stormed security checkpoints in the Charamgar area of Tirinikot city.
He confirmed that a number of security personnel and attackers had suffered casualties.
A public representative, Provincial Council Chairman Abdul Karim Khadimzai confirmed that at least 22 policemen including an Afghan Local Police (ALP) commander were killed and 11 others wounded in the attack by Taliban. Nine police officials have been missing in the wake of the fierce clash, he added.
The attack came a day after at least three Afghan border policemen were killed and nine others wounded in a clash with Taliban rebels in Afghanistan’s southern Kandahar province bordering Pakistan.
Taliban rebels have paced up their attacks across Afghanistan rejecting the peace dialogue offer by Afghan government. (end) sbk.mt
