KUWAIT, Sept 7 (KUNA) -- Humanity is historically instilled in Kuwait's leadership and people, said Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah on Wednesday.
In a keynote speech marking the second anniversary of the UN accolade for His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah as a 'Humanitarian Leader' and Kuwait as a center of humanitarian action, Sheikh Mohammad Al-Abdullah; also acting information minister, said the September 2014 honoring was "unique" throughout the history of the international organization, as it paid tribute to each and every human suffering in the world.
Quoting a segment of His Highness the Amir's speech on the occasion, Sheikh Mohammad Al-Abdullah said "the acts of benevolence and philanthropy are inherent values in the hearts of the Kuwaiti people, as they are inherited generation after generation from their forefathers." Humanity, Sheikh Mohammad Al-Abdullah carried on saying, "has almost never been consensual over honoring a leader like it did with His Highness the Amir. His Highness mirrored our humanitarian selves, in which each one of us saw his/her injustice-refusing nature." The Minister recalled the Syrian crisis, which is entering its sixth "catastrophic" year, highlighting Kuwait's humanitarian "upper hand" in supporting the Syrian people, both inside the plagued Arab country, or the ones in refuge.
In addition to massive grants and contributions, Kuwait had hosted three international donor conferences to aid the Syrian people, as well as gearing up to host the ninth meeting for major donors next January.
On her part, Dima Al-Khatib, Representative of UNDP-Kuwait said that Kuwait's contributions were not limited to financial assistances, but also drove the international community to heavily contribute through conferences hosted by Kuwait.
Meanwhile, Director of the UNHCR office in Kuwait Hanan Hamdan said "despite its relatively small geographical space, Kuwait's leadership and people are embracing a pioneering role in humanitarian action on regional and international levels." On September 9, 2014, the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon presented, at the UN headquarters in New York, His Highness the Amir with the Global Humanitarian Leadership Award. (end) mdm.hb
