CAIRO, Sept 1 (KUNA) -- The Arab League's Secretary General Ahmad Abul Gheit on Thursday urged closer Arab cooperation for increased economic stability and sustained development.
In a speech during the opening session of the 98th meeting of the Arab Social and Economic Council, Abul Gheit said that the pervasion of terrorism has stalled development and rampant conflict in the region remains the biggest impediment to economic growth.
Moreover, he underscored the importance of safeguarding youth from the ill effects of radical and extreme ideologies, adding that such congregations provide an opportunity for Arab nations to synchronize their efforts.
Furthermore, he noted that despite an economic slump in many Arab nations, plans and projects are being devised to enhance joint work, as he revealed that an electronic portal that would allow for further interaction between the Arab League and various organizations is in the works. Meanwhile, Tunisian Minister of Commerce and Industry Ziad Al-Ezari highlighted the need of increased Arab collaboration to deal with mounting challenges in a volatile juncture, as he named a number of projects that aim to induce economic growth.
The one-day meeting will feature discussions on numerous critical issues, in addition to a report by the Arab League Secretary General on the implementation of decisions made in previous meetings. (end) aff.nam
