People killed by Italy's earthquake rise to 278

ROME, Aug 26 (KUNA) -- Eleven new bodies were recovered from under the rubble in the ill-fated Italian town of Amatrice Friday, raising death toll of devastating earthquake to 278, the Italian Civil Protection Department said.
The department said in a statement 218 people were killed in Amatrice alone - the most devastated - while 11 in the town Accumoli in Lazio and 49 in Marche.
It said there were three British nationals, two Romanians and a Spaniard among the survivors. The number of injured was 388 people while 2,500 people were left homeless.
The department said up to 1,059 aftershocks were reported, the strongest was today morning measuring 4.8 degrees.
Meanwhile, the Italian government announced Saturday a day of mourning nationwide with flags flown at half mast. The Italian President and Prime Minister would be among participants of an official funeral for the victims of the 6.2-magnitude earthquake. (pickup previous) mn.bs
