ROME, Aug 24 (KUNA) -- The death toll of the strong earthquake that rattled Italy earlier Wednesday has risen so far to 120, while the Prime Minister Matteo Renzi announced a two-day mourning.
After inspecting the quake-hit areas, Renzi told reporters that the number of victims rose to 86 in Lazio and 34 in Marche, adding that the rescue teams have transferred by air about 368 injured people to nearby hospitals.
The destructive quake will leave profound effects in the earthquake-hit areas and the government will ensure the reconstruction of all these areas, he added. Both the Italian and European flags were lowered to half-mast on Chigi Palace, and headquarters of Chamber of Deputies, Senate, ministries and institutions across the country.
Meanwhile, the civil defense said earlier that the ongoing relief operations involved units from the armed forces, firemen and the Red Cross.
Earlier the civil defense reported that ten of the deaths were reported in Arquata, Marche, and 28 others in the towns of Matrice and Accumoli.
The National Geophysical Volcanic Institute said up to 150 tremors were registered in Lazio, Umbria and Marche as well as other regions. The strongest one was recorded 6.0 degrees, followed by two others of 5.1 and 5.4 degrees.
Others areas that were ravaged by the earthquake were Posta and Arquata del Tronto. (Pick up previous) mn.hm
