TUNIS, July 31 (KUNA) -- Tunisia's parliament has passed a vote of no confidence in Habib Essid's government, late Saturday night, where the voting session continued for almost 10 hours.
The session was held with attendance of 186 deputies out of 217, where the no-confidence motion was passed by 118 votes, easily crossing the 109-vote needed, three voted for him to stay and 27 abstained, reported Tunis Afrique Presse (TAP).
Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi had proposed on June 2, 2016, the formation of a national unity government which enjoys the support of the majority of political and social sensibilities, said TAP.
TAP added that the consultations around the presidential initiative resulted, on July 13, in the signing of the "Document of Carthage," a summary document that defines the priorities of the national unity government.
Essid said he would do his best to make sure the transition to the new government was a tranquil one. Despite fierce criticism of his government during an extraordinary parliamentary session, he said the debate "consecrated Tunisia’s nascent democracy".
"Despite the serious problems our country faces, we have no fear for Tunisia which has the resources to face up to the challenges," he added, before being given a standing ovation by those who had ousted him.
The Carthage document was signed by the parties of Nida Tounes, Ennahdha, UPL, Afek Tounes, Project of Tunisia, Echaab movement, Destourian Initiative, the Republican Party (Al-Joumhouri) and the Democratic and Social Path (Al-Massar) and the Tunisian General Labour Union, the Tunisian Confederation of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts and the Tunisian Union of Agriculture and Fisheries, TAP concluded.
