Kerry warns of big risk if Russia strategy on humanitarian action in Aleppo is ruse

WASHINGTON, July 29 (KUNA) -- Secretary of State John Kerry on Friday said if the Russian strategy surrounding the opening of humanitarian corridors to Aleppo, Syria, is a ruse, it risks destroying US-Russia cooperation in Syria.
During a brief appearance at the State Department with United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al-Nahyah, Kerry was reacting to question if he thought the Russian humanitarian operation for Aleppo was a ruse.
Kerry said he had spoken to top officials in Moscow about the issue twice in the last 24 hours.
"This is very much potentially a challenge, but we have a team that is meeting today working on this, and we'll find out whether or not it's real or not," Kerry said. "It has the risk, if it is a ruse, of completely breaking apart the level of cooperation.
"On the other hand, if we're able to work it out today and have a complete understanding of what is happening and an agreement on the way forward, it could actually open up some possibilities," he added. "We just don't know fully until we finish the conversations today." (end) rm.bs
