Sanders: political revolution continues, Clinton 'must' become Pres

WASHINGTON, July 26 (KUNA) -- Former Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders headlined the first night of the Democratic National Convention on Monday where he advocated for the party to support Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign while noting that his self described "political revolution" will "continue." For the Clinton campaign, the speech was an attempt garner the support of Sanders' 13 million voters who supported him during the US' primary process.
The Vermont Senator was received by the arena with astounding applause and chants of his name which brought some delegates to tears.
"I hope you take enormous pride in the historical accomplishment we have achieved," Sanders told his followers. "Together, together, my friends, we have begun a political revolution to transform America, and that revolution, our revolution, continues!" He asserted, "based on her ideas and her leadership, Hillary Clinton must become the next president of the United States." Sanders recited his list of platforms regarding economic inequalities, healthcare, and the justice system to note that Clinton is much more "determined" to fix such issues while Trump "has a very different point of view." Sanders told his supporters who say they would rather not vote, than support Clinton at all to "think about the Supreme Court justices that Donald Trump would nominate and what that would mean for civil liberties equal rights and the future of our country." First Lady Michelle Obama also spoke during the convention's opening night and gave what was regarded as an emotional and symbolic speech that spoke towards Clinton's personal character.
"I trust Hillary to lead this country because I've seen her lifelong devotion to our nation's children, not just her own daughter, who she has raised to perfection," said Obama. "Hillary has spent decades doing the relentless, thankless work to actually make a difference in their lives advocating for kids with disabilities as a young lawyer, fighting for children's health care as first lady." She continued, "Because of Hillary Clinton, my daughters and all our sons and daughters now take for granted that a woman can be president of the United States." "So don't let anyone ever tell you that this country isn't great, that somehow we need to make it great again," said the First Lady in a jab at Trump's campaign slogan. " "Because this right now is the greatest country on earth." (end) ak.tg
