Today in Kuwait's History

KUWAIT, July 26 (KUNA) 1912 -- Sheikh Mubarak Al-Sabah, the seventh ruler of Kuwait, agreed to a British government plan to establish a telegraph line in Kuwait.
1978 -- Al-Qahwa Shabiya, a traditional coffee shop, was inaugurated in Shaab.
1996 -- Pioneer Kuwaiti poet and actor Abdulrahman Al-Dhuwaihi passed away, aged 62.
1999 -- Sudanese Minister of External Affairs Dr. Mustafa Osman Ismail hoisted the Sudanese flag atop the makeshift Sudanese Embassy in Kuwait and set the corner stone for a new embassy compound.
2001 -- The Beirut-based Arab Unity Studies Center awarded a prize of appreciation to Jassem Al-Qatami for his contributions on the Arab arena. Al-Qatami, who held the position of foreign undersecretary in the 1960s and was MP for three terms, was a human rights activist.
2003 -- Advisor Salah Fahad Al-Fahad, head of the Court of Appeals' fourth criminal department, passed away at the age of 54. He also headed the National Security Court after Kuwait's liberation in 1990, and was head of the stock market crisis settlement body.
2004 -- Khalifah Talal Al-Jeri passed away, aged 75. He was a pioneer Kuwaiti politician and member of the Constituent Council in 1962, member in the first parliament in 1963 and again in 1981. He was also among the first contributors to development of private education and served as chairman of the private schools union and several cultural institutions.
2006 -- Kuwait Autism Society was officially established.
2006 -- Kuwait National Society for Child Protection was officially established.
2007 -- Ali Al-Zankawi clinched the gold medal in the shot put, hitting 75.71 meters, at the Asian Track and Field Games held in Jordan.
2010 -- Amiri decree 269/2010 was issued to establish Kuwait center for the Holy Quran studies. The center operated under jurisdiction of the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs.
2010 -- Kuwaiti educator Abdulbaqi Abdullah Al-Nouri passed away at age 81 after a long career in education, industrial development, and politics.
2011 -- Saad Al-Abdullah Academy for Security Sciences celebrated graduation of 265 lance corporals and 47 police cadets.
2012 -- UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon lauded Kuwait's positive role in boosting world peace and security.
2014 -- His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah received Saudi Crown Prince, second Deputy Prime Minister, and envoy of the Saudi Monarch Prince Muqrin bin Abdulaziz bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud. (end) gta
