Arab Parliament chief calls for strategy to cope with crises

NOUAKSCHOTT, July 25 (KUNA) -- Arab Parliament Speaker Ahmad Al-Jarwan on Monday called for mapping out a joint Arab strategy to resolve crises threatening the nation security.
In his statement at the Arab Summit, Al-Jarwan said the top-level meeting is being held amid regional and internal challenges namely terrorism, calling for urgent action to "uproot this hateful phenomenon." He noted necessity of activating the Arab Defense Treaty to face internal and external challenges, condemned recent "terrorist operations" witnessed in European nations and called for unifying efforts at the international level to combat terrorism.
Arab leaderships must rapidly take action to tackle strifes and hazards in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Libya and Somalia, he said, calling for "fundamental solutions to these issues and conflicts." "Boosting rapprochement at the Arab level has become a popular demand," Al-Jarwan said, warning of "hostile schemes" aimed fomenting racial and sectarian discords in the Arab counties.
Arab peoples, despite mushrooming crises and dangers, still view the Palestinian issue as the nation number-one cause, Al-Jarwan said, "and the main factor for ensuring security and peace in the Arab region lies in finding a just and comprehensive settlement to this cause." He condemned "the provocative and continuing Iranian intervention in Arab affairs, particularly in the Bahraini issue, "called on Tehran to end its occupation of the three UAE islands, Greater Tonb, Lesser Tonb and Abou Moussa, through direct negotiations or via international arbitration.
For his part, Idriss Debbi, Chairman of the African Union and President of Chad, also addressed the conference, affirming significance of the Afro-Arab ties, saying "Africa without the Arabs has no future," noting that the African nations have been suffering from terrorism.
Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Iyad Madani said both the OIC and the Arab League are on the same path with regard of addressing the nation problems, namely challenges such as extremism and violence. (end) ms.kns.rk
