No political motivation behind Munich attack - Germany

BERLIN, July 23 (KUNA) -- The German police on Saturday said there was no indication of a political motivation behind the Friday night's deadly shooting attack at Munich's Olympia-Einkaufszentrum shopping mall.
The talk is about a "classic shooting rampage" that has no political motivation, a Munich police spokesperson told a press conference on Saturday.
At least nine people were killed and 27 others wounded in the attack, committed by a demented 18-year old German-Iranian, who also shot himself dead.
There were "no evidence" of links to any terrorist group found in the gunman's home, the spokesman said, and described the tragedy as a "classic shooting rampage," and "killing spree." Since, the authorities are assuming there is no political motivation behind the attack, so the terrorism investigation is being shut down, he said.
Most victims are young people with eight of them aged 14-20, among them three females.
The police declined to comment if the attack targeted youth.
Later today, German Chancellor Angela Merkel is convening her security council, which includes senior minister, in Berlin.
On Monday evening, a 17-year-old Afghan asylum seeker went on a stabbing rampage and attacked Chinese tourists on a train in the southern city of Fortsberg. Five people were injured, one of them in a critical condition. (end) anj.msa
