Biden urges Turkey to abide by "rule of law"

WASHINGTON, July 21 (KUNA) -- US Vice President Joe Biden urged the Turkish government Thursday to abide by the "rule of law" as it continues to crack down on thousands of civilians believed to have supported last week's attempted military coup.
In a phone call with Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim, Biden "urged that the investigations into the coup's perpetrators be conducted in ways that reinforce public confidence in democratic institutions," the White House said.
Biden also assured Yildirim that the US "stands ready to provide assistance to Turkish authorities conducting their investigation into the coup attempt, and that our legal experts are prepared to work with their counterparts on this matter," the White House affirmed.
The Obama Administration has repeatedly condemned last week's attempt to overthrow the democratically-elected government of Recep Tayyip Erdogan. (end) ys.ibi
