Iraqi army announces 28 IS members killed S. Mosul

IRBIL, July 2 (KUNA) -- The Iraqi army announced on Saturday that up to 28 fighters of the so-called Islamic State were killed in separate operations in southern Mosul, north of Iraq.
Among the killed is leader Hammadi Taha Yassin Al-Khafaji, a source in the leadership of the Liberation of Nineveh operations told KUNA.
It said that some IS militants and suicide bombers tried to confront some units of the leadership of the Liberation of Nineveh operations earlier today, adding that "our soldiers, tribal mobilization forces and the coalition aircraft killed all of them." The aircraft targeted some IS posts by missiles, killing six militants, including a prominent leader, the source noted.
The aircraft also destroyed two mortar detachments in the village of Jelha in Qayyarah sub-district, south of Mosul, killing five IS militants, it said.
Iraq's security forces and Peshmerga continued carrying out operations in Nineveh to liberate the areas controlled by IS. The forces have managed during the previous operations to liberate some villages. (end) sbr.hm
