Humanitarian disasters require collective responses - Kuwait envoy

NEW YORK, June 29 (KUNA) -- Abdulaziz Saud Al-Jarallah, first secretary of Kuwait's Permanent Mission to the United Nations, said Wednesday the international community needs to work collectively to address the challenging humanitarian crises in several parts of the world.
It is a shared responsibility to tackle these crises which pose threat to the international security and stability, he said in a statement to the a panel discussion during the UN Economic and Social Council's Humanitarian Affairs Segment being held between June 27 and 29.
These crises are so big that no country can address them solely, he said, affirming that the humanitarian disasters worsened in the last decade mainly due to armed conflicts that took their toll on civilians, including children women and elderly people.
In this connection, he called on the concerned parties to work urgently for addressing the root causes of conflicts, stop the bloodshed and find political solutions that could protect the safety of civilians.
The State of Kuwait continues its commitment to contributing to the international efforts to alleviate the suffering of people trapped in, or rendered homeless due to, armed conflicts particularly in Syria, he went on.
Over the last five years Kuwait hosted three international humanitarian pledging conferences for the Syrian people and co-hosted with Britain, Germany and Norway a fourth one in London.
These donor conferences helped raise a total of USD 7.6 billion in aid of the Syrian people, Al-Jarallah said, noting that Kuwait met the pledges it made in the first three conferences and is doing so regarding the fourth one according to the set timetable.
He voiced pride for Kuwait ranking first among all countries in terms of the ratio of its aid to its GDP for the last two years running. (end) mao.gb
