Russia urges Yemeni parties to push for political solution

MOSCOW, June 28 (KUNA) -- Russia on Tuesday called on the Yemeni forces meeting in the State of Kuwait to push for a political settlement to end the conflict in their country.
"We call upon the Yemeni forces and other parties concerned to exert serious efforts to reach political solutions within the framework of negotiations in the State of Kuwait and under the UN sponsorship," the foreign ministry said in a statement.
It hoped the Yemeni government, Ansrallulah movement and the General People's Congress overcome their differences and approve UN Special envoy to Yemen Ismael Ould Cheikh Ahmad's roadmap for a political settlement.
It said the ongoing conflict in Yemen was hampering efforts to fighting terrorism.
The Yemeni parties have been meeting in marathon talks in Kuwait since last April 21.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, addressing the Yemeni parties in Kuwait two days ago, said the situation in Yemen was of profound concern.
"There is an alarming scarcity of basic food items. The economy is in precarious condition. Whilst the cessation of hostilities is mostly holding, there have been serious violations, causing further casualties and suffering amongst the civilian population, including children," said Ban. "This worrying situation gives you, the delegations to the Yemeni talks, a very serious responsibility." However, Ban expressed hope by the commitment of both delegations over a period of many weeks, and into this holy month, to reach a successful outcome. (end) as.bs
