Juncker calls on Cameron to clarify situation

BRUSSELS, June 28 (KUNA) -- President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker said here Tuesday that he will ask British Prime Minister David Cameron during a meeting later today in Brussels to clarify the situation as soon as possible after the Brexit vote.
"We cannot be embroiled in lasting uncertainty," he told an extraordinary session of the European Parliament which is meeting discuss and vote on a resolution assessing the outcome of the UK referendum and its consequences for the European Union. "We respect the outcome. We have to respect the will of the British people," he said but added that he is sad over the vote and regrets the results.
Juncker said he will ask for some clarifications "not necessarily immediately because the British system is more complicated than we think." He stressed that there can be no preliminary discussion or secret negotiations with the British officials. "No notification no negotiation," he said.
After last Thursday's vote the UK has to trigger article 50 of the EU's Lisbon treaty to start the negotiations to leave the EU.
On Thursday 23rd of June, the British people voted in a referendum on whether to stay in or leave the European Union. Up to 51.9% voted in favour for Leave, and 48.1% for Remain.
EU leaders are to meet Cameron Tuesday evening to seek clarification on the next steps of the British government after the Brexit. (end) nk.rk
