KUWAIT, June 27 (KUNA) -- The World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday commended Kuwait for providing medical aid to victims of wars and conflicts all over the globe, adding that the country's only proviso is that refugees should receive the bulk of that aid.
Speaking to KUNA, WHO's official spokesperson Rana Saidani said that Kuwaiti donations given to Syrian refugees over the past three years now total USD 68 million, noting that the donations have ramped up the organization's ability to meet the medical needs of refugees.
Moreover, Saidani also said that the donations have been used to help train medical personnel on how to conduct live-saving operations and suppress ailments such as diabetes and malnutrition.
Meanwhile, she also underscored that WHO is faced with numerous challenges as a result of rampant armed conflict and the spread of diseases such as Ebola and Zika.
Saidani highlighted the fact that the Middle East is amongst the most regions in need of financial assistance, due to the spread of an array of diseases that have claimed the lives of more than 60 percent of people. (end) msa.nam
