French Min. urges rapid Brexit timetable

PARIS, June 27 (KUNA) -- French Finance Minister Michel Sapin on Monday urged a rapid implementation of Britain's decision from the European Union (EU), referred to as Brexit.
Britons on Thursday voted 52 percent to 48 percent to leave the EU after 43-year membership in the political and economic bloc.
Speaking on national television, Sapin said there was broad agreement between the French and German powerhouses that Britain should exit the 28-nation EU as rapidly as possible.
Britain must first invoke Chapter 50 of the EU Charter before the withdrawal negotiations can take place and there is a two-year delay for the process to be fully put in place.
"France, like Germany, says as Britain has voted for the Brexit --- this should be quickly implemented," Sapin said on "France 2" television.
President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel are meeting with the EU presidency in Berlin later Monday to review the situation before an EU Summit in Brussels on Tuesday.
The meeting will try to iron out reported differences between Merkel and Hollande on the pace of implementing the Brexit.
Sapin warned that the European Union cannot stay in "an uncertain and indefinite situation" after the British vote. (end) jk.msa
