BERLIN, June 26 (KUNA) -- The European Parliament's Martin Schulz has urged the British government to start formal proceedings to leave the European Union (EU) during a European summit on Tuesday.
The EU holds a two-day summit on Tuesday in Brussels to discuss the fallout from the British vote. The Parliament will also hold a special session.
A period of limbo over Brexit will "lead to even more insecurity and thus endanger jobs," Schulz told German newspaper Bild am Sonntag Sunday.
"Hesitating simply to accommodate the party tactics of the British conservatives hurts everyone," he said. "That is why we expect the British government to now deliver. The summit on Tuesday is the right time." Meanwhile, German Chancellor Angela Merkel will receive in Berlin on Monday EU Council President Donald Tusk, French President Francois Hollande and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi to Berlin for talks on how to secure European unity after Britain referendum vote to quit the 28-member bloc.
Britons on Thursday voted 52 percent to 48 percent to leave the EU after 43-year membership. (end) anj.msa
