Belgian diplomat to lead EU task force to negotiate UK exit

BRUSSELS, June 25 (KUNA) -- The European Union has set up a special task force that will negotiate the terms and conditions of the UKآ’s withdrawal from the EU with British Government officials after the referendum on Thursday voted for Brexit.
The task force will be headed by a top Belgian diplomat Didier Seeuws, according to Belgian media reports Saturday.
Seeuws is said to have wide experience of the EU and was Chief of Staff of the former President of the European Counci Herman Van Rompuy. Seeuws is currently the Director of Transport, Telecommunications and Energy at the European Council.
Article 50 of the EU contains the conditions for a country to leave the EU but it does not give much details about the exit process. A member state leaving the EU has two years to negotiate the withdrawal.
The outgoing UK PM David Cameron said his successor will begin negotiations with the EU once he formally steps down in October.
However, the EU doesnآ’t want to waste any time and has started straight away with the preparations for the negotiations with the UK government about the Brexit. (end) nk.nfm
