Obama: Brexit "speaks to ongoing challenges" raised by globalization

WASHINGTON, June 24 (KUNA) -- The vote for Britain to leave the EU, also known as Brexit, "speaks to the ongoing changes and challenges that are raised by globalization," US President Barack Obama said in remarks at Stanford University on Friday.
"But while the UK's relationship with the EU will change, one thing that will not change is the special relationship that exists between our two nations," he added.
Earlier, Obama spoke with British Prime Minister David Cameron and said, based on their conversation, he is "confident" Britain is "committed to an orderly transition out of the EU." Separately, he spoke with German Chancellor Angela Merkel to affirm that the US and its European partners will work "closely together," in the months ahead.
"Our NATO alliance will remain a cornerstone of global security, and in a few weeks, we'll be meeting in Warsaw for the NATO Summit," Obama reiterated. "And our shared values, including our commitment to democracy and pluralism and opportunity for all people in a globalized world, will continue to unite us all." (pickup previous) ak.hb
