Kuwait's grant to WHO benefits several affected areas -- official

KUWAIT, June 19 (KUNA) -- Kuwait's grant, worth USD 68 million, provided to the World Health Organization (WHO) have benefited several affected areas across the globe, said official of partnerships at WHO Meftah Twaileb.
Twaileb made the statement on Sunday during a meeting with KUNA's Deputy Director-General for the editorial sector and Editor-in-Chief Saad Al-Ali at the headquarters of the agency.
He added that the grant contributed to developing health situations in a number of countries all over the world, amid a wide gap between international needs and financial resources.
Twaileb noted that the grant will end on June 30, lauding Kuwait's generous support which helped reach several areas to provide medical services in Syria and its neighboring countries which host huge number of Syrian refugees.
The State of Kuwait is the only donor to back the program of health projects for refugees in Egypt, he said, indicating that there will be a problem, if this program doesn't continue.
The WHO official referred to a rapid response of Kuwait aimed to control the Cholera in Iraq, stressing that the grant curbed the spread of disease among internally displaced persons.
He expressed his gratitude to KUNA for its effective role in covering news on humanitarian situations, affirming the media role in showing needs of humanitarian action and shedding light on challenges facing humanitarian organizations.
Meanwhile, Saad Al-Ali said KUNA, as a media institution, has humanitarian responsibilities which are in line with journalism ethics, stressing the agency's impartiality and objectiveness in covering news.
He pointed out that KUNA is paying much attention to educate the public on humanitarian needs across the globe and the WHO's efforts that need a media and financial support, reiterating KUNA's keenness on constantly covering these humanitarian efforts.
He underlined the need to shed light on health needs of refugees in the upcoming period. (end) akh.nfa.hm
