US alerts citizens to "potential terrorist attacks" at Euro 2016 in France

WASHINGTON, May 31 (KUNA) -- The US on Tuesday issued a travel alert ahead of football's 2016 UEFA Euro Championship set to be held in France from June 10 to July 10, citing the risk of "potential terrorist attacks." "Euro cup stadiums, fan zones, and unaffiliated entertainment venues broadcasting the tournaments in France and across Europe represent potential targets for terrorists, as do other large-scale sporting events and public gathering places throughout Europe," read a State Department release.
"France has extended its state of emergency through July 26 to cover the period of the soccer championship, as well as the Tour de France cycling race which will be held from July 2 to 24," it added.
The State Department went on to highlight Krakow, Poland, as another destination of concern due to the July 26-31 Catholic event of World Youth Day, which is expected to draw up to 2.5 million visitors.
"We work closely with our allies and will continue to share information with our European partners that will help identify and counter terrorist threats," the statement concluded. (end) sd.mt
