ISLAMABAD, May 29 (KUNA) -- At least four Afghan policemen have been killed and 10 others wounded during a clash in Afghanistan's southern Helmand province, said officials said on Sunday.
A spokesman for the provincial governor, Omar Zwak said that the clashes took place on the Laskhargah highway and in Nadi Ali and Nah-e-Saraj districts of the province when dozens of fighters attacked security forces' outposts.
He confirmed that four policemen including Afghan Local Police (ALP) commander, Safar Mohammad lost their lives while 10 others sustained injuries in the clashes. More reinforcements were sent to the areas to support local security forces, he added.
According to local media reports, Taliban spokesman Qari Yousaf Ahmadi claimed that they had captured eight security posts in Nahr-i-Saraj and Greshk districts of the province.
The clashes came at a time when Taliban rebels have announced Mullah Haibatullah Akhunzada as their new chief after the death of their former chief in United States led drone strike at Pak-Afghan border. (end)
