NEW DELHI, May 27 (KUNA) -- Indian army on Friday announced that six militants and a solider were killed in intense gunfights that took place in two different locations in the disputed state of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Indian armed forces exchanged heavy firing with militants suspected to be from Pakistan based Jaish-e-Mohammed militant group in Toot Mar Gali Nowgam of Handwara in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, the All India Radio reported, citing the defense spokesman.
The gunfight, which lasted for two days, resulted in the killing of four militants and one Indian soldier.
In another incident two militants named Mehraj Bhat and Adil Mir allegedly from Hizbul Mujahideen were killed in Army firing in the Khonchipora village of Tangmarg in Baramulla district of the disputed state.
These developments are coming amid increasing tension in the Valley following intelligence inputs about infiltration of a number of militants from across the Pakistani border.
The Indian armed forces have been on high alert since the killing of two militants during a manhunt launched after the killing of three policemen by unidentified militants who came riding motorbike and shot at the security personnel from close range in the capital city of Srinagar. (end)
