RIYADH, May 26 (KUNA) -- The command of the Arab coalition to support the legitimate authorities in Yemen renewed on Thursday commitment to the rules of the international humanitarian law and the International human rights law.
The military intervention in Yemen stemmed from the principled stance of the coalition partners' on self-defense and their shared responsibility towards the Yemeni people, and was based on a formal request by the legitimate president of Yemen, according to a press release by the command.
The statement cited the parameters and rules of engagement, previously set by the command of the coalition in accordance with the international humanitarian laws, regarding the identification of hostile military sites precisely in collaboration with credible sources in order to prevent the all of civilian casualties.
The rules of engagement include constant updating of the lists of possible targets with the exclusion of civilian cites, places of worship, archaeological sites, and premises of diplomatic missions and local and international government and non-government organizations.
The coalition forces used high-precision weapons to attack targets belonging to the Houthi group and supporters of the former president Ali Abdullah Saleh despite the high cost of such weapons, the statement pointed out.
The coalition command usually verifies any allegations about targeting civilian sites or facilities of aid agencies, it said, noting that an independent commission of inquiry into such claims was formed to shoulder the responsibility for assessing any collateral damage and preventing any error.
Since the first day of the military operation in Yemen, the command of the coalition has attached great importance to the humanitarian action and set up a task-force to supervise the evacuations and relief effort for the people trapped in the conflict, it added. (end)
