EP urges more European engagement to resolve Syrian crisis

BRUSSELS, May 24 (KUNA) -- The President of the Syrian National Coalition Anas Al-Abdah discussed with the European Parliament's foreign affairs committee Tuesday the developments in Syria and urged for more European support.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Al-Abdah thanked Europe for all its support to the Syrian people during the last five years.
"We do hope that this support will continue and we are also asking Europe to play a bigger role in terms of political support and partner in the negotiations in Geneva 3 and also to help achieve a peaceful and political settlement in Syria in order to start the political transition," he added.
On his part, the chair of the EP's foreign affairs committee Elmar Brok said they got the proper information from the Syrian Coalition to build their own picture about the Syrian conflict.
He said there is a proxy war in Syria that has to be overcome for a peaceful solution.
"We hope that the ceasefire which is a condition to establish that would become more stable and that people can sit at the table to negotiate which is the only chance to overcome the situation," said Brok.
"We in the European Union are ready to support that. I think Europeans should take more responsibility there because this is our neighbourhood this is in our own interests to stop the war which is the root cause for migration," he said.
"We should be clearer involved in that, the EU and its member states in a coordinated way. Marshall fund for Syria must be our goal," he added. (end) nk.mt
